INFO ABOUT COFFEE, PRODUCERS AND ORIGINS.
The new co-operative society of Gatanga producers has four main washing stations and Gathanji is one of them, opened in 1995.
A total of 581 small producers deliver drupes to the Gathanji station, where they are processed using the washed method.
This area has a rich, deep red volcanic soil, for which Kenua is well known. The small producers maintain their land well through the support of the cooperative's agronomists.
The production of the Gathanji cooperative is now at about 250,000 kg of processed drupes per season.
The typical Kenyan processing method is the washed one: the ripe drupes are first sorted by hand 'picking' and then placed in water where the wormy, rotten and unripe ones are removed.
The coffee is then fermented in parchment, water or air in vats and then rinsed with clean water before being placed alone on raised beds to dry.
